President’s Spring Update

May 8, 2019 Dear Friends, Springtime brings increased activity at Whitney Benefits. The staff is working tirelessly to prepare Whitney Commons for an influx of visitors as the weather warms and the outdoor amenities can be enjoyed. You will notice a few new features at Whitney Commons this year. A new sculpture has been displayed to enhance the beauty of the park and honor Mr. Whitney’s memory. In collaboration with the Sheridan Public Arts Committee, Whitney Benefits has displayed the sculpture “Balancing Boys” by Utah artist Dan Hill. This three-piece sculpture can be viewed on the west side of the park abutting the sidewalk on North Jefferson Street. In addition to the sculpture, new construction is starting in the Whitney Commons plaza area. To add to the allure of the popular water spray grounds and amphitheater, construction has begun to erect a pavilion in this area. When complete, this pavilion will provide a covered community space for further enjoyment of the outdoors in our beautiful community. Construction also continues this spring on the new residence hall at Sheridan College. Whitney’s financial commitments have made this construction possible which will provide much needed on-campus housing for over 100 additional students. Whitney Benefits has aided in funding housing at Sheridan College in the past and as the need increases we are glad to be a part of continued growth in this area. As the days lengthen and the flowers begin to bloom, Whitney Benefits continues to work on Mr. Whitney’s intent to give back to the community. We hope you take time to enjoy all that Whitney Commons has to offer and can plan to enjoy the new features in the future. We will continue to keep you updated on the work Whitney Benefits is doing in the community and we look forward to seeing you in Whitney Commons this summer. Warmest regards, Roy Garber Whitney Benefits Board President

Director’s Spring Update

Dear Whitney Scholars, One of my favorite things is hearing about your passions. It is especially heartening to learn how a connection made through our Whitney interest free loans, or one of our other resources, helped you overcome a challenge to accomplish great things, or just made you and your family’s life better in Sheridan. One question I’m asked is - “What are Whitney’s goals in the next few years?” I would submit to you the following: 1. Amplify our impact in the Sheridan Community through interest free student loans. Our commitment to help you or a family member attend vocational or secondary education school remains as strong as ever. In the years ahead, you can expect continued focus in this area. 2. Build a broader and deeper community through sharing and collaboration with other foundations and with our Whitney Scholars. From our earliest days, beginning in 1927, the Trustees and the Whitney team has been receptive to your needs and the community’s feedback. Helping you and our community thrive and excel is what fuels our collective strength. We are committed to growing and strengthening our community and creating more opportunities for meaningful connections. 3. Advancement of inclusion. Whitney recognizes that inclusive practices result in greater community impact. Whitney understands that to continue the vision of Edward A. Whitney, that we must focus on our mission and incorporate inclusivity with our community members, our Whitney Scholars, and with our partners. 4. Maximize what we know and share with others. One of our values is to be a team player and share what we do and what we know with others. Whitney will continue to collaborate and “share” what we know. We know that we do not know it all, and certainly are open to others thoughts and feedback. We aim to provide valued resources and seek educational opportunities through a myriad of options that appeal to all types of individuals, philanthropic groups, and other non-profits. With Whitney regards, Patrick Henderson Whitney Benefits Executive Director
